Senior Accountant

Horizon Recruitment Inc. looking for a skilled Senior Accountant to join a growing and dynamic construction company. While the title reflects the hands-on nature of the role, the responsibilities are at a management level, making this an ideal opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in both leadership and execution.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors and senior leadership, this role is responsible for oversight of all day-to-day accounting, tax, finance, and reporting activities across a group of operating companies with a combined budget of over $200 million. This individual will manage and mentor a team of five, while also stepping in as needed to ensure smooth operations — including supporting tasks like invoice processing during peak periods. It’s a unique blend of strategic oversight and operational involvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the accounting operations across multiple entities, including oversight of AP, AR, payroll, GL, and benefits programs
  • Ensure financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable standards and regulations
  • Maintain and improve internal controls and financial procedures
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual regulatory filings and reporting
  • Monitor and manage cash flow and fixed asset investments (fleet of 60+ vehicles)
  • Provide financial insights and reports to senior leadership
  • Oversee corporate income tax filings for a large and diverse group of entities, including operating companies, holding companies, partnerships, trusts, and more
  • Liaise with external accountants to coordinate tax filings and year-end financials
  • Maintain CPA licensing to support internal tax reporting where applicable
  • Lead a team of five accounting staff and support their ongoing development
  • Define roles, streamline workflows, and implement training where needed
  • Step in to assist with processing tasks (e.g. AP or payroll) during high-volume periods or transitions
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable team environment

Requirements:

  • CPA designation required; MBA is an asset
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, and tax, ideally in multi-entity or group structures
  • Strong understanding of construction or project-based accounting
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements and corporate tax filings
  • Comfortable operating at a management level, while remaining hands-on when needed
  • Proficiency in Sage 50/100/300 and Profile tax software
  • Deep knowledge of Canadian payroll, labor standards, and tax law
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Integrity, attention to detail, and a strong sense of ownership over outcomes

Rewards:

$120,000 - $145,000
