THE ROLE
We are looking for a Controller who will serve as a trusted financial business partner to the President, someone who owns the numbers, interprets them, and helps drive better decisions as a result. Horizon operates across two revenue streams: contract recruitment, which generates recurring margin from an active contractor workforce, and permanent search, which generates placement fees. The Controller understands both and ensures the financial picture reflects the full business accurately. We are not looking for someone to maintain the status quo. The right person is always looking for a better way, whether that means automating a manual process, simplifying a workflow, or flagging an opportunity to do something smarter. WHAT YOU WILL DO
This role spans the full scope of finance and accounting operations, including:
- Full-cycle accounting: general ledger ownership, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statements
- Management reporting: practice-level P&L, variance analysis, cash flow, and financial commentary to the President
- Contractor payroll: end-to-end ownership of a specialized in-house payroll model across multiple provinces and payroll groups
- Contractor agreement administration: primary resource for consultant T&C questions and compliance oversight
- Client invoicing across contract and permanent revenue streams, including AR management
- Statutory filings: GST/HST, source deductions, EHT, T4s, and year-end corporate filings including holdco
- Vendor and provider relationships: insurance, BackCheck, banking, external accountants, and license renewals
- Systems migration: lead the move from QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise to QBO and integration with Salesforce
- Budgeting, reforecasting, and ongoing process improvement across all finance functions
WHAT YOU BRING
- Degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation an asset
- Proven experience at controller level with full-cycle ownership across accounting and finance operations
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks; prior experience with a Desktop to QBO migration is a strong asset
- Comfort with systems integrations; experience connecting QBO or similar platforms with a CRM or billing system is an asset
- Experience in recruitment, professional services, or project-based billing environments is an asset
- Prior exposure to multi-province payroll and compliance (BC, AB, ON)
- Experience managing a complex in-house contractor workforce payroll is a significant asset
- A self-directed work style; you assess, prioritize, and execute without waiting to be managed
- You communicate proactively, flag issues early, and bring solutions alongside them
- Comfortable being the department; hands-on execution is the job, not managing others who do it
