Controller
Horizon Recruitment is recruiting for a Controller to support a growing food manufacturing and distribution business based in Calgary. This position plays a key leadership role in managing the organization’s financial operations, providing accurate and timely reporting, and delivering insights that inform strategic decisions. The Controller will help drive process improvements, ensure compliance, and foster a high-performing finance team aligned with the company’s growth goals.
Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for senior leadership.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP/IFRS and internal accounting standards.
- Analyze financial trends and variances; recommend actions to enhance performance.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll accounting, and inventory.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes with accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to reduce risk and support compliance.
- Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team to ensure accuracy and accountability.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling initiatives.
- Partner with other departments to improve systems, processes, and financial alignment.
- Identify and implement improvements in accounting systems and reporting tools.
- Build strong relationships with external service providers (banks, insurers, IT vendors).
Requirements
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5-7+ years of progressive finance experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Solid understanding of GAAP/IFRS and financial reporting.
- Experience in manufacturing, construction, or related sectors is an asset with revenues above 500 million.
- Proficient with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
